Prayer Requests

Ronald Yukio Konda has asked to be included in our Community of the Holy Fire prayers. His mother died last year, and this has been a very difficult time for him.

Mary Park Christie is undergoing treatment for a recurrence of cancer. Please remember her in your prayers.

Jinsuk Grossi needs prayer for strength to be able to continue her chemotherapy.

Let’s remember that we have certainty and boldness to be able to enter the throne room of God (1 John 5:13-15). God hears our prayers, and yes, He does answer them. All praise be to Him.

Visit to Sweden

Ellen and I had the privilege of worshiping in our home church (adopted), the Hällebergskyrkan Church in Lüngsjkile, Sweden, yesterday. Most members arrive about 45 minutes before the the actual worship service, sitting quietly in prayer as they anticipate and prepare for worship. One person may begin singing very softly, then another, and yet another joins in perfect harmony, as the Spirit leads His people without human exertion. At one point a person may offer a quiet prayer, soon joined by others. Then silence again in corporate solitude, as young and old including small children at times, continue to prepare their hearts and minds for the soon to begin service of worship.

The highlight of yesterday’s worship service was the youth choir who sang in both Swedish and English, with fresh joy and obvious love for Jesus! At a time when it is not popular to be a Christian in Sweden–one young student told me it is even taboo on university campuses in Stockholm to profess Jesus Christ–these young men and women were taking a firm stand for Christ without shame or embarrassment. They know that the Gospel of the Kingdom is the power of God for salvation to all who believe.

My first words to them were the words spoken to Daniel by the angel Gabriel, as Daniel was interceding for his people: “You are greatly loved!” (Daniel 9:23) We do not need to be afraid even though the majority may oppose us. Be courageous and bold, because God is with us! Wherever God may send us, God is there with us.

Yesterday I met young men and women of Sweden who are living the with-God life,  running against the stream of the highly secularized, materialistic without-God life of contemporary Europe and North America.

Now is the time to lift up our prayers for the growing numbers of such young people whom the Holy Spirit is raising up throughout the world to proclaim the Gospel of life in Jesus Christ.

My parting words to my dear friends at Hällebergskyrkan were, “You are indeed part of the worldwide community of the Holy Fire.”

THE COMPANY OF THOSE WHO FEAR THE LORD

The year 2012 was one of the best years of my life. It was the year I fully embraced the fear of the Lord as the key to world evangelization. I am very thankful for all that happened that year, even for the cancer that I had to fight, and thankfully now have overcome by the grace of God and the prayers of many who prayed for me.

Later, when I told my doctor that the whole experience was a wonderful time for me, he looked at me and said, “Are you crazy”? I admitted that probably I was a little strange, according to the world’s thinking, he then admitted that probably all of us are a little crazy. It just depends on who you’re crazy for—for Jesus, or for the fame and wealth of the world.

The time of sickness brought my extremely busy and overly active life to a complete halt. So I had time to ask the basic questions of life. “Do I love Jesus more now than when I did when I first committed my life to him just before entering university? Or am I just busy working for the Lord?” “Am I 100% committed to Jesus Christ, with all of my mind, emotions, will and strength?” “Is there anything I am committed to more than God?”

I prayed to God for a holistic healing—not just for my body, but also for my mind and heart, and all my relationships. That’s when I discovered what an amazing treasure God has given us in the “fear of the Lord.”

It is fitting that the Old Testament ends on the note of the fear of the Lord, for we cannot expect to experience the glory of the New Testament—that is, the manifestation of the full love of God—without becoming a holy people. The prophet Malachi speaks of the company of those who “fear the Lord.” He describes them as those who esteem His name by walking in holiness. The Lord invites them into His “secret chamber,” to have conversations together and to enjoy intimacy with Him as His “treasured possession.” (Malachi 3:16-18)

This evening we will begin our “New Korea Servant Seminar” in Restenas and Stockholm, Sweden. We will remember, as we gather to listen to what God is saying about His plans for North Korea and the entire Korean Peninsula, that most of the world stands in fear of North Korea. Even though we know there is nothing to fear, we cannot seem to erase the fear. The only way to remove this fear, as well as all our fears, is by having a larger fear, the Fear of the Lord. “Friendship with the Lord is reserved for those who fear Him,” says the psalmist. (Psalm 25:14) This fear is a gift from the Lord, as the hymn writer reminds us in Amazing Grace, “ . . . ‘twas grace that taught my heart to fear (fear of the Lord), and grace my fears (worldly fears) relieved . . .”

Just what is this fear, the “fear of the Lord?”

1. It begins with the Word of God. One name for God’s Word is “The Fear of the Lord.” (Psalm 19:9) God’s Word is pure, containing no guile, no hint of falsehood. God’s Word is perfect, personified in Jesus; our souls are revived. His Word is right! If there is a question, there is indeed a right answer, the Word of God; this fills us with joy. The Word of God is pure, enlightening our hearts with great understanding. The Word—the Fear of the Lord—is clean, enduring forever. Once God speaks, we can hold on to the Word and trust Him to be faithful to all He promises. God’s word is true, leading us into righteousness and justice.

 2. Standing before that Word—which is pure, clean, true, right, sure. trustworthy, and perfect—we allow God’s Holy Spirit to work in our lives to transform us into the image of Jesus Christ. At times the Word comes to us as fire, burning away our filth and self-centeredness; at other times God’s Word comes as a hammer, breaking us so that our innermost roots of pride and sinful lusts are revealed and brought to the forgiving and healing light of God’s grace; His Word always leads us into truth, the truth about God, about ourselves and the world. “If you abide in My Word,” says Jesus, “you shall know the truth; and the truth will set you free!” (John 8:31-32) God feeds us by His Word, nurturing the deep hunger within our souls and filling us with deep joy and satisfaction in Christ alone. God’s Word brings light that enables us to see the world as God’s creation, and He continues to create within us a new desire to walk away from sin and evil, to no longer compromise with Satan or the anti-God world. We are transformed, slowly but without question, into the image of Christ, who said of Satan, “He has nothing to do with Me; he has no claim on Me.” (John 14:30) Being transformed daily in God’s Word, we begin to hate what God hates—sin and evil—and love what God loves—the world. We become equipped to walk in the ways of God to glorify Him in the world.

 3. But the fear of the Lord does not end here. It is not simply turning away from sin and evil. It is also turning to God with a deep sense of awe and wonder, filled with expectation that He is going to work through me, and through the whole Body of Christ, to complete His work of salvation for the world.

Read through the Book of Acts, and you will meet men and women who have no fear of the world or of those who seek to persecute and kill them. You will meet Peter and John, who walked in such boldness in the face of those who could have imprisoned or killed them, that the Jewish leaders were puzzled and confused; they could only recognize that these simple men had been with Jesus! (Acts 4:13) You will meet people who prayed with boldness even while they were being persecuted, that God would continue to use them to proclaim His Gospel, heal the sick, and free people from demonic control.

We live in troubled times, but the Lord is the stability of our times; He has a treasure for us, a treasure that contains abundance of salvation, wisdom and knowledge. The fear of the Lord is that treasure. (Isaiah 33:6)

This treasure is available to all who ask. Proverbs 2:4-5 gives us the invitation: “If you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.”

Today our greatest need, the one essential thing the whole Church of Jesus Christ needs, is to have the fear of the Lord. It not only an individual search; we must search for this treasure corporately, as the Body of Christ. This is why the prophet Malachi speaks of the “company of those who fear the Lord”. We must help one another walk in the fear of the Lord. You must help me, and I must help you. This may be the greatest thing we can do for one another in these last days of the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God.

“Those who feared the Lord spoke with one another,” said the prophet. “The Lord paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before the Lord of those who feared the Lord and embraced His name.” (Malachi 3:16)

Then the Lord began to pour out His promises, and He continues to do so today. “They shall be Mine,” says the Lord. Intimacy with the Lord! Living in this fearful world without any fears, no longer fearing Satan, the anti-God world, or evil men. All fears are removed when the Great Fear is present. Why is this so? Because the fear of the Lord is really the love of the Lord! There is no fear in love. And this is how we are able to live in the world and work joyfully in places like North Korea.

There is a distinctiveness about people who fear the Lord. It is the distinction between those who serve God and those who do not serve God. The world takes notice. My friends, the world knows, when you speak or act, whether or not you are living in the fear of the Lord.

I pray for this gift for every church throughout the world, for every mission society—YWAM, Campus Crusade, Wycliffe, for every denominational or non-denominational mission organization—that we will discover together the treasure of the fear of the Lord.

Then, together, we will see the glory of the Lord revealed in the world today—the fullness of God’s love made manifest among the nations, all to His glory.

The first evening Ellen and I arrived in Sweden we were greeted by what appeared to be an apparition of God’s Holy Fire in the forest as we were walking. It turned out to be the sun’s last rays reflected on the trees deep in the forest.

It reminded me that wherever we happen to be, God’s Holy Fire is there. It may be visible or at times invisible. Sometimes it is a “Silent Fire,” as it appeared to me when I wrote this poem about God’s presence in North Korea.

“’For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but My steadfast love shall not depart from you, and My covenant of peace shall not be removed,’ says the Lord, who has compassion on you.”                                                                        Isaiah 54:10

SILENT FIRE IN NORTH KOREA

Walk through the valleys and see

The hills barren and naked in gray.

Only the silence of God is seen,

No words are spoken here.

Pray through the valleys and hear,

The barren places, His voice resounds.

Not silent, He speaks;

His lovingkindness the hills restored.

The peace of God His wondrous peace

That shakes the destroyer from his throne,

Invades the silence with wordless praise,

The compassion of God in glory raised.

Open our eyes, Lord, to see You

Walking in blazing glory and splendor

Among the ashes of your people,

Rekindling the healing holy fire of Your power.

Let the world see Your faithfulness.

You who makes darkness your light

And barrenness Your fruit.

Your silent fire burns bright and clear.

Carriers of the Presence of God

So spoke Fr. Mikail Atef, with whom we spent a short time recently. “The Holy Spirit is not a visitor,” he said. “He seeks a place of rest. That is why tongues of fire (the fire of the Holy Spirit) rested on those who welcomed Him at Pentecost.”

Speaking very directly to the Church today, he lamented the fact that so many Christians, including charismatic and evangelical Christians, seek “times,” or “events,” or “happenings,” when the Spirit descends with power and visible effects. Others seek to contain God’s Spirit in their programs and good things they are seeking to do “for the Lord.” (“For the Lord”? Perhaps we should ask if it often is not for ourselves, to maintain our fragile spirituality, or to keep our churches lively.)

All Christians are called by God to become “carriers of the Divine Presence.” We do indeed seek God’s presence, but we need to remember that just as the tribe of Levi was chosen to carry the Ark of the Covenant, so today we are chosen by God to become His dwelling place. (Ephesians 2:22) God has carried us all on eagles’ wings (Exodus 19), especially during difficult times; but we also have been chosen and called to carry His presence to the world.

The great prayer of those who belong to the community of the holy fire is to be holy, in all our thoughts, words and actions. We cannot expect anything glorious without becoming holy people.

Prayer is the key. Waiting prayer. We in Pneuma Springs (www.ywam-aiim.org) are committed to making 24/7 prayer the foundation, together with the Word of God, of all that we do for the world. Let us not only seek God’s presence; let us also carry God’s presence to the world.

Brothers and sisters of the community of the holy fire! Let’s join together, as carriers of the Divine Presence, to see God’s glory manifest.

‘THERE IS NO HOPELESSNESS IN GOD’ Prayer Page

We would like to hear from you concerning those who are going through fiery trials, whether it be because of sickness, loss of some kind, oppression, suffering because of their faith, or any other reason.

There is no hopelessness in God. Jesus Christ is the Risen Lord, and He gives life to all who believe in Him and follow Him. He transforms death into life, despair into hope, and sadness into joy. By bringing the names of those who are suffering before the throne of God, together in harmony, we know that He will hear and answer our prayers.

Please feel free to let us know of those you know personally, and we will pray for them together, confident that the Lord will meet them in their fiery furnace, just as He met Daniel’s three friends. Our confidence is that of Martha, who confessed to Jesus at the time of her brother Lazarus’ death, “But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” (John 11:22)

Some names:

Mary Park Christie

Fire of Cleansing, Renewal and Restoration

This painting by Rembrandt tells the remarkable story of God’s welcoming, always available, constantly renewing and restoring love. No sin is too great for God to forgive, no distance too far for His love to reach, no rebellion His love cannot overcome.

God’s love appears as cleansing fire. He appeared in the midst of the fiery furnace with Daniel’s three friends. The fire was so hot that it killed the men who threw them in. But they emerged unharmed, because the presence of God (the 4th Person) appeared to them in the fire and protected them. The fire was not God’s fire, rather it was the fire of the devil intended to destroy these three men. But God appeared in the fire and redeemed them by His love; so it became the fire of God’s presence.

How many of God’s people are walking through the fires today, or persecution, debilitating illnesses and diseases, chronic pain, loss of income or houses, as well as many other things. But God is walking with each of His children, even in the midst of the fires.

But there is the fire of God which we may choose: the fire of God’s purifying love. God’s fire purifies us by melting the hardest substance in the world, which is our hearts. His Spirit burns through hardened hearts and melts them, producing brokenness. When we are baptized with this Fire of God our hearts are opened and we are broken before Him, ready to be remolded just as the silversmith remolds precious metals that he has melted into beautiful works of art.

Then God’s Holy Spirit has full control of our lives. Is this not the desire of every child of God? To have a burning heart for Jesus!

God is refining His Church today through Jesus’ baptism with the Holy Spirit and fire. The  desire of each member of the Community of the Holy Fire is for God to continue His work of purification by fire in our lives, so that the mark of our lives will be clearly seen to be holiness before the Lord.
