A Word About Angels

We often deal with God’s mysteries by “explaining everything away.” We do this when we can’t understand some Bible meanings, or when we deal with various phenomena that we don’t understand.  We used to work at a university that was about an hour’s distance from our home. It was late at night, and I was trying to be careful of traffic and also deer that cross the highways at night. I was very sleepy and still had about 45 minutes to go. The next thing I knew, I was pulling into my driveway. How did I get there safely? The last thought I had when driving was that I was afraid of dozing. But here I was in front of my house. Could it have been an angel who was guiding me? I was unable to “explain it away.”

I began to think of how God protected Daniel in the lion’s den, and how Peter was unable to explain how he escaped from prison. God was orchestrating everything, and His angels obeyed His commands. Angels are present in our daily lives, even though we are not aware. Angels are ministers of God sent out to help those who are receiving salvation. They appeared to Zechariah, John the Baptist’s father, and to many others. The angel Gabriel spoke both to Mary and Joseph and gave them courage to follow the Spirit’s leading. Angels ministered to Jesus at crucial times in His earthly life.

Our purpose in studying Hebrews is not to try to understand angels, but it does compel us to be aware of their presence. Great throngs of angels worshiped at Jesus’ birth; they spoke to the women at the empty tomb.

Hebrews 1:6 says, “Let all the angels worship Jesus.” Most of you probably have been in a time of worship where you felt the supernatural presence of the Lord in your midst. Of course it is God the Holy Spirit who is leading you. But perhaps His angels were leading you into God’s presence to worship in Spirit and in truth. The angels’ greatest calling is to praise and worship the Lord. They do this night and day before the Throne of God and of the Lamb.

At times they lead us in a very unique way. Back in the early 1970’s, as we were beginning an international student ministry in Korea, we held an evangelism training conference at the Anglican seminary in Seoul. We were seeking to hear from God in order to establish foundations for our future direction of ministry to the world. We had committed to be a community that made worship, the Word of God, and witnessing to Jesus Christ the center of all that we would do. But we wanted God to speak directly to us about our priorities. He did indeed speak, but not in the way we were expecting!

Each morning at the conference, at 5:30 AM, we began our day by praising and worshiping God in the school’s chapel, appropriately named “Chapel of the Heavenly Hosts.” It was my morning to lead worship, but I overslept. Quickly the nine of us in our small room put on our clothes and rushed to the chapel. Our dormitory was about 5 minutes from the chapel. As we were running, we heard beautiful praise coming out of the chapel, more beautiful than usual. From the other direction, an older staff lady was running toward the chapel with a dozen or more girls behind her. We all paused a moment in astonishment at the beauty and power of the praise that was coming from the chapel. We entered and no one was there. But the praise continued. I looked at my watch, and it was only 3:00 AM! We didn’t oversleep; we just were awakened at 3:00 AM by the sounds of praise. Over twenty of us were gathered there, and we experienced together this mighty visitation of the angelic hosts! God confirmed to us that the heart of missions is worship and praise, and that He had raised up our ministry to call the nations to praise the Lord! In this strange, almost unbelievable yet historic event, God laid the foundation for the ministry of Yesujeondodan (lit., “Jesus Evangelism Band”—later to become Youth With A Mission Korea).

Perhaps you have some testimonies of how angels have ministered to you, led you closer to the Lord, directed your paths onto God’s way, or protected you at critical times. Please share them with others who may be with you now, and be sure to let us all know about them.

Let’s not get too excited or curious about angels; but let us be careful not to ignore them or attempt to “explain them away.” You may notice other activity of angels as we continue our study of Hebrews. They are agents of God to help us on our pilgrimage of faith.

Hebrews 2:1-4 – The Danger Facing the Hebrew Christians

The second chapter of Hebrews opens with a warning, the first of five such warnings in the book. Look for these warnings as you continue to study. This first warning is that they were in danger of drifting away from the great salvation of God in Jesus Christ. They were beginning to drift away because they neglected “so great a salvation.”

Remember that the Church of Ephesus, all of whom had experienced the amazing love of God—the long, high, deep and wide love—left their first love. They did so by neglect; they began to drift away from God’s love without knowing it was happening. They were occupied with maintaining pure doctrine and making sure that there was no heresy in their church, but they drifted away from the “new commandment” that Jesus gave His disciples the night before He was crucified. (John 13:34-35) They took their eyes off of Jesus. The author of Hebrews warned them, “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?”

The solution to the problem of drifting away from our great salvation is twofold.

First, pay closer attention to God’s mercy and grace in saving us. Take a few moments and consider the greatness of your salvation in Christ. In what ways is your salvation great? Read Isaiah chapter 53 and discover what happened on the cross of Calvary: Jesus forgave us for our sins that we commit every day. He destroyed the root of sin—pride, arrogance at trying to live without God. He brings peace that the world cannot understand, and He heals our sicknesses, mentally, emotionally and physically. (Isaiah 53:4-6) Jesus Himself is our salvation.

All the angels in heaven worship Him. All people on earth must worship Him. If we will make worship of God our top priority, then we will not drift away from this great salvation.

Have you experienced the miracle of salvation in your personal life? Are you a worshiper who continues to commit your body as a holy, living sacrifice, which is your spiritual worship?

Second, understand how it was brought to us. Jesus Himself called us to make our home in Him and in the Father. He proclaimed the Kingdom of God. It was confirmed by the disciples and apostles of Jesus. Then God Himself bore witness through miraculous signs and wonders of His Holy Spirit.

Hebrews 2:5-18 – God has put all things in subjection to His Son, Jesus Christ.

After telling us that God did not subject the world to angels, the author quotes Psalm 8. Take a moment to read this psalm in the Old Testament; then read it again here in the New Testament.

In the Old Testament, we read that God put the whole world in subjection to man, giving him dominion over all creation. It is a beautiful psalm that shows both the majesty of God and also the remarkable dignity of man. It speaks of man in general. But in the New Testament the “son of man” is identified as Jesus Christ. In Matthew 21:16, when children worship Jesus, Jesus quotes from Psalm 8 to show that their praise of Him is right. In 1 Corinthians 15:27 and Ephesians 1:22, Paul teaches that God’s putting all things in subjection under man’s feet finds its fulfillment in Christ. This passage in Hebrews does the same thing. Through Christ’s coming to earth, He restores to fallen man the dignity and wholeness of his life. Psalm 8 can be applied to ourselves only through its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. (This is how we should understand the Psalms, because they are fulfilled in Jesus Christ.)

We do not yet see . . .

We do not yet see all things subjected to Christ. (Hebrews 2:8)

All the world would agree to this statement. We do not yet see the demonic coronavirus subjected to Christ. We do not see the evils of homelessness, refugees, greed and many other evils under His control. The world is in great despair and confusion because of these evils. Yet we Christians walk by faith and not by sight. Faith is the evidence of things not seen. Non-Christians cannot see, because God’s Kingdom is hidden; it is not of this world.

So we do not despair and lose hope.

But we see Jesus! (Hebrews 2:9)

God made Jesus “for a little while” lower than the angels, through His suffering and death on the cross. But now—through His resurrection, we see Jesus crowned with glory and honor! By His suffering and death, Jesus experienced death for every person in the world, past, present and future!

Do you see Jesus as Lord over the coronavirus? Lord over the kingdoms of this world? Our focus is important. When we focus on fake news, bad reports, dangers to come, we are worshiping worldly fear. We worship what we focus on, and we Christians must not be guilty of false worship. When we worship God, we see Him at work today in the world. We do not underestimate the evil powers of Satan, but we proclaim that the Lord Jesus Christ reigns over all powers of sin and death.

When we see Jesus, we become bold and confident. At times we Christians do worry and are afraid. Fear is a natural emotion. But we have experienced the truth that perfect love drives out all fear. We do not have time to be afraid! We must work together and cooperate with our governments and be diligent in taking sanitary measures to curb this virus. We dare not underestimate it’s deadly power by saying that it will be over soon. We do not know. We must be careful and not be presumptuous. Now is the time for Christians to rise up and become encouragers and to reach out in loving service to the lost world.

Consider these questions:

1. What happens when fear grips a whole nation, or nations? How can we Christians bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to those who are paralyzed by fear and anger?
2. What are you doing to “remember” your Great Salvation? Do you feel like a victim?
3. We are not angels, but we can cooperate with God and welcome His angelic help. Have you tried calling upon God to send His angel forces to curb this pandemic?
4. In what specific area in your life do you need to see by faith that Jesus is reigning?
5. Try to share a word of hope to someone in the next few days.

우리는 때로 하나님의 신비를 “설명으로만 넘어가려고” 할 때가 있습니다.  성경의 어떤 부분들에 대한의미를 이해할 수 없을 때나, 아니면 우리가 이해할 수 없는 다양한 현상들을 대할 때 그렇게 하곤 합니다. 우리 부부가 집에서 한 시간 정도 떨어진 대학교에서 사역할 때의 일이었습니다. 늦은 밤이었고, 밤길을 운전하는 동안 도로 상황과 고속도로를 가로지르는 사슴 등에 주의하면서 집으로 가고 있었습니다. 졸음이 아주 많이 밀려왔고, 아직 집까지는 45분 정도 더 가야 했습니다. 그 다음 알게 된 것은 어느덧 집 앞 진입로에 들어서고 있었다는 사실입니다. 어떻게 제가 안전하게 거기까지 다다를 수 있었을까요? 마지막으로 기억나는 것은 제가 졸음이 밀려오는 것에 두려움을 느꼈던 것이었습니다. 그런데 저는바로 우리집 문 앞에 서 있었습니다. 저를 지켜주던 천사가 저와 함께 있었다고 생각할 수 있지 않을까요? 저는 그것을 그저 “설명으로만 넘어갈” 수는 없었습니다.

저는 하나님께서 어떻게 사자굴에서 다니엘을 보호하셨는지, 베드로가 감옥에서 어떻게 나올 수 있었던이유를 왜 설명할 수 없었는지에 대해 생각하기 시작했습니다. 하나님께서는 모든 것을 조화롭게 지휘하고 계셨고, 그의 천사들은 하나님의 명령에 순종했습니다. 비록 우리가 알아채지는 못한다 해도 천사들은 우리 일상 생활 속에 존재하고 있습니다. 천사들은 구원받은 사람들을 돕도록 보냄을 받은 하나님의사역자들입니다. 그들은 세례 요한의 아버지 스가랴에게 나타났고, 다른 많은 사람들에게도 임했습니다.천사 가브리엘은 요셉과 마리아에게 말씀을 전했고, 성령의 인도하심을 따르도록 용기를 주었습니다. 천사들은 예수님께서 이 땅의 삶을 사는 동안 맞이하셨던 결정적인 순간들에 그분을 섬겼습니다.

우리가 히브리서를 공부하는 목적은 천사들을 이해하려는 것이 아니라, 그들의 존재를 우리가 인식하도록 의도하고 있다는 점입니다. 예수님께서 탄생하실 때 거대한 천사의 무리들이 경배했고, 또한 그들은빈 무덤에서 여자들과 대화를 나눴습니다.

히브리서 1장 6절은 “하나님의 모든 천사들은 그에게 경배할지어다”라고 말씀합니다. 아마도 우리들 중대부분은 주님의 초자연적인 임재의 한복판에 있었던 것을 느꼈던 적이 있었을 것입니다. 물론 그것은우리를 인도하시는 성령 하나님의 인도하심이었습니다. 그러나 아마도 하나님의 천사들도 우리를 영과진리 안에서 하나님을 예배함으로 그분의 임재 안으로 들어가도록 이끌어 주었을 것입니다. 천사들의 가장 큰 부르심은 주님을 찬양하며 경배하는 것입니다. 그들은 주야로 하나님의 보좌와 어린양 앞에서 그렇게 찬양과 경배를 드리고 있습니다.

때로 천사들은 아주 특별한 방법으로 우리를 이끌어 갑니다. 지난 1970년대 초, 한국에서 대학생 사역을시작하고 있었고, 서울에 있는 성공회신학교에서 전도학교를 진행하고 있었습니다. 우리는 세상을 향한우리의 미래 사역의 방향을 구하며 사역의 기초를 세우기 위해, 하나님의 음성 듣기를 구하고 있었습니다. 우리는 예배와 하나님의 말씀, 그리고 예수 그리스도를 증거하는 것이 모든 사역의 중심이 되는 공동체를 세우도록 하는 데 함께 헌신했습니다. 그렇지만 우리는 하나님께서 우리의 우선순위에 대해 직접말씀해 주시기를 원했습니다. 주님께서는 실제로 말씀해 주셨는데, 그것은 우리가 기대했던 방법이 아니었습니다!

매일 새벽 5:30분에 우리는 찬양과 경배로 하루를 시작했습니다. 우리가 모인 곳은 학교의 채플실이었는데, 적절하게도 “천군천사성전” (Chapel of the Heavenly Hosts) 으로 이름 붙여진 곳이었습니다. 그날아침은 제가 예배를 인도하기로 되어 있었는데, 그만 늦잠을 자고 말았습니다. 같은 방에 자고 있던 9명의 형제들은 즉시 일어나 옷을 챙겨 입고 채플실로 달려갔습니다. 기숙사 방에서 채플실까지는 5분 정도 걸리는 거리였습니다. 달려가는 동안 아름다운 찬송 소리가 채플실에서 들려오는 것을 들었고, 그것은 평소보다 훨씬 아름다운 소리였습니다. 그때 반대편에서 한 여자 간사님이 달려오는 것을 볼 수 있었는데, 그 뒤로 한 무리의 자매들이 뒤따라오고 있었습니다. 우리는 그 자리에 멈춰 서서 채플실에서 흘러나오는 아름답고 힘 있는 찬양에 놀라움을 금치 못했습니다. 예배당 안에 들어갔을 때 거기에는 아무도 없었습니다. 찬양은 계속되었고, 그때 시계를 보았는데 새벽 3시였습니다! 우리는 늦잠을 잔 게 아니었습니다. 그 찬양 소리가 우리를 새벽 3시에 깨웠던 것이었습니다. 스무 명이 넘는 사람들이 거기 모여서 천사들이 이처럼 강력하게 임하는 것을 함께 경험했습니다. 하나님께서는 선교의 중심이 경배와 찬양이며, 열방을 불러서 주님을 찬양하도록 하기 위해 우리 사역을 일으키셨음을 확인시켜 주셨습니다. 이처럼 낯설고도 믿기 어렵지만, 역사적인 사건들 속에서 하나님께서는 예수전도단의 사역의 기초를 놓으셨습니다. (예수전도단은 ‘예수님을 전하는 모임’ (Jesus Evangelism Band)이라는 뜻으로, 후에 한국YWAM이 되었다.)

아마 여러분에게도 천사들이 우리를 어떻게 섬겨 주었는지, 주님께로 가까이 다가가도록 이끌어주었는지, 그리고 우리가 하나님의 길로 나아가도록 길을 지시해주거나 위기의 순간들에 우리를 지켜 주었는지에 대한 간증들이 있을 것입니다. 그 간증들을 지금 여러분들과 함께 하게 될 다른 사람들과 나누고, 우리 모두에게도 그것들을 꼭 알려 주십시오.

천사에 대해 너무 흥분하거나 호기심을 갖지 마십시오. 그러면서도 그들에 대해 무시하거나 “설명으로만 넘어가려고” 하지 않도록 주의하십시오. 우리가 히브리서를 공부하는 동안 천사들의 다른 활동들을발견할 수 있을 것입니다. 그들은 우리의 믿음의 순례길을 돕는 하나님의 사역자들입니다.

히브리서 2:1-4 – 히브리 그리스도인들이 맞닥뜨린 위험

우리가 큰 구원으로부터 멀어지는 문제를 해결하는 길은 두 가지가 있습니다.

첫째, 우리를 구원하시는 하나님의 자비와 은혜를 더 가까이 주목해야 합니다. 잠시 동안 그리스도 안에서 우리에게 주어진 구원의 위대함을 깊이 생각해 보십시오. 우리를 향한 구원은 어떤 면에서 위대합니까? 이사야 53장을 읽고 갈보리 십자가에서 무엇이 일어났는지 발견해 보십시오. 예수님은 매일 우리가짓는 죄들을 용서해 주셨습니다. 그는 하나님 없이 살아가고자 하는 교만과 완고함 같은 죄악의 근원을물리치셨습니다. 세상이 이해할 수 없는 평강을 주셨고, 정신적, 감정적, 그리고 육체적인 질병들을 치유하셨습니다. (이사야 53:4-6) 예수님이 우리의 구원 그 자체이십니다.

하늘의 천사들은 예수님을 경배합니다. 땅의 모든 백성들은 그분을 경배해야만 합니다. 하나님을 향한예배를 우리의 최우선순위로 놓을 때, 우리는 이 큰 구원으로부터 멀어지지 않을 수 있습니다.

개인의 삶 속에서 구원의 기적을 경험해본 적이 있으십니까? 당신은 우리 몸을 거룩한 산 제물로 드리는 영적 예배 드리기를 쉬지 않는 예배자입니까?

둘째, 어떻게 그 구원이 우리에게 임했는지 이해하십시오. 예수님은 우리가 예수님과 하나님 아버지 안에 우리의 처소를 삼도록 직접 불러내셨습니다. 그는 하나님의 나라를 선포하셨습니다. 그것은 예수님의제자들과 사도들을 통해 확증되었습니다. 그리고 나서 하나님께서 성령으로 말미암아 이적과 기사를 통해 그것을 직접 보증하셨습니다.

구약에서 우리는 하나님께서 온 세상을 사람의 발 아래 두시고 모든 피조물을 그가 다스리게 했다는 것을 읽을 수 있습니다. 이 시편은 하나님의 위엄과 사람의 말할 수 없는 존귀함을 모두 보여주는 아름다운 시편입니다. 그런데 “인자”는 신약에서 예수 그리스도를 대표하는 말입니다. 마태복음 21:16절에, 어린이들이 예수님을 예배하는 장면에서 예수님은 시편 8편을 인용하면서 예수님을 향한 그들의 찬양이옳다는 것을 보여주셨습니다. 고린도전서 15:27절과 에베소서 1:22절에서 바울은 하나님께서 만물을 사람의 발 아래 복종하게 하심으로 그리스도 안에서 그것이 성취될 것이라고 가르칩니다. 히브리서의 이구절들은 같은 것을 보여줍니다. 예수님께서 이 땅에 오심으로써 그 생명의 존귀함과 온전함에서 추락한인간을 회복시키셨습니다. 시편 8편은 오직 예수 그리스도 안에서 그것이 성취되어야만 우리 자신에게적용될 수 있습니다. (이것은 우리가 어떻게 시편을 이해해야 하는지를 보여주며, 그것은 시편의 말씀이예수 그리스도 안에서만 이루어질 것이기 때문입니다.)

우리가 아직 보지 못합니다 (히브리서 2:8)

우리는 만물이 그리스도께 복종하는 것을 아직 보지 못합니다. (히브리서 2:8)

세상 모든 사람들은 이 말에 동의할 것입니다. 우리는 아직 포악한 코로나바이러스가 그리스도께 복종하는 것을 보지 못했습니다. 우리는 그분의 통치 아래 있는 노숙자, 난민, 탐욕 그리고 다른 많은 악을 보지 못했습니다. 세상은 이러한 악으로 인해 엄청난 낙심과 혼돈 속에 있습니다. 그러나 우리 그리스도인들은 보이는 것이 아닌 믿음으로 행하는 사람들입니다. 믿음은 보지 못하는 것들의 증거입니다. 비그리스도인들은 볼 수 없습니다. 하나님의 나라는 숨겨져 있고, 이 세상에 속하지 않았기 때문입니다. 그래서우리는 낙심하지 말고 소망을 잃지 않습니다.

그러나 우리는 예수를 봅니다! (히브리서 2:9)

하나님께서는 예수님을 그의 고난과 십자가에서 죽음을 통해 “잠시 동안” 천사보다 조금 못하게 하셨습니다. 그러나 지금 그의 부활을 통해 우리는 영광과 존귀로 관 쓰신 예수님을 봅니다! 고난과 죽음으로예수님은 과거 현재, 그리고 미래의 세상 모든 사람들을 위해 죽으셨습니다!

예수님을 코로나 바이러스를 다스리는 주님으로 보십니까? 이 세상 모든 나라의 주가 되심을 보십니까?우리가 어디에 시선을 두는지가 중요합니다. 우리가 가짜뉴스, 잘못된 기사들, 다가올 위험들에 초점을둘 때 우리는 세상의 두려움을 예배하고 있는 것입니다. 우리의 시선이 향하는 것이 우리가 예배하는 대상이며, 그리스도인들은 잘못된 예배의 죄를 저질러서는 안 됩니다. 하나님을 예배할 때 우리는 오늘 세상 속에서 행하시는 하나님의 일을 보게 됩니다. 우리는 사탄의 악의 능력을 과소평가하지 않으며, 주예수 그리스도께서 모든 죄와 죽음의 권세를 다스리심을 선포합니다.

예수님을 바라볼 때, 우리는 강하고 담대하게 됩니다. 때로 우리 그리스도인들은 염려하고 두려워합니다.두려움은 자연스런 감정입니다. 그러나 우리는 완전한 사랑이 모든 두려움을 몰아낸다는 진리를 경험했습니다. 우리에게는 두려워할 시간이 없습니다! 우리는 정부와 함께 협력하면서 이 바이러스를 억제시키기 위해 위생적인 조치들을 취하는 데 부지런해야 합니다. 이 위기가 곧 끝날 것이라고 말하면서 그 치명적인 힘을 일부러 과소평가해서는 안 됩니다. 우리는 알 수 없습니다. 신중해야 하며 쉽게 예측해서도안 됩니다. 지금은 그리스도인들이 잃어버린 세상을 향한 격려자들로서 사랑의 섬김으로 다가가기 위해일어날 때입니다.

생각해볼 질문들

1. 두려움이 온 나라 또는 온 세계를 사로잡을 때 어떤 일이 일어납니까? 그리스도인들은 두려움과 분노로 무력해진 사람들에게 예수 그리스도의 복음을 어떻게 가져갈 수 있습니까?
2. 우리에게 주신 큰 구원을 “기억하기 위해” 무엇을 하고 있습니까? 당신이 피해자라고 생각하십니까?
3. 우리는 천사가 아니라 하나님과 협력하면서 그의 천사들의 도움을 맞이하는 사람들입니다. 이 세계적인 바이러스의 대유행을 억제하여 주시도록 천사를 보내달라고 하나님께 구해보신 적이 있습니까?
4. 다음 몇 일 동안 누군가에게 소망의 말을 나누어 보십시오.

히브리서의 프롤로그 – 히브리서 1:1-4

하나님께서는 “오래 전부터” 말씀하셨습니다. 그는 선지자들을 통해 여러 번에 걸쳐 많은 방법으로 말씀하셨습니다. “선지자들”은 선지서들만이 아닌 구약 성경의 모든 저자들을 말합니다. 몇 가지 예를 들어 보겠습니다.

• 모세 – 타오르는 떨기나무 덤불에서
• 엘리야 – 작고 세미한 음성으로
• 이사야, 에스겔, 예레미야 그리고 다른 선지자들 – 환상과 예언의 말씀들로

세상을 향한 하나님의 권위 있는 마지막 말씀은 예수 그리스도입니다. 예수님은 하나님의 최상의 소통의 통로이자, 모든 사람들과 함께 하는 하나님의 궁극적 관계의 근원입니다.

앤드류 머레이 (Andrew Murray)는 하나님께서 온 인류에게 알게 하기 원하시는 가장 큰 진리는 예수 그리스도만이 구원의 근원이시며, 하나님의 아들을 아는 것이 믿는 자들의 힘이라고 말했습니다. (덧붙이는 말: 앤드류 머레이 (Andrew Murray)는 많은 소책자들을 저술했으며, 그가 쓴 어떤 책을 읽든지 그것은 우리를 힘 있게 하고 하나님에 대한 더 깊은 지식 안으로 이끌어 줄것입니다.)

히브리서 1:5-14

Lesson Two

Who were the Hebrews?

The Hebrews to whom this letter was written were Christians of Jewish background. There is no reference to non-Jewish Christians in this letter. They knew the Scriptures very well, including all the ceremonies of Mosaic worship. But they did not put them into practice. They especially knew the Psalms, which are quoted many times in this letter. Chapter one alone contains references to 6 Psalms! They also knew the Greek language and would have appreciated the excellent Greek that the author used.

They had experienced suffering for the sake of the Gospel. (Hebrews 10:32-35; 12:4) Most importantly, they were in danger of turning away from the Living God. They were not new converts. Hebrews 5:12 says that “by this time you should be teachers.”

The author (unknown) is urging them not to leave Jesus Christ, who alone is their salvation. He emphasizes the truth that Jesus Christ is superior to all that they have learned about the culture of the Mosaic Law. While you are studying this letter, think of Jesus Christ as Superior to all religions, to all religious leaders, to all that the world has to offer. He is Jesus Christ, Son of God, Lord of all nations. There is no salvation apart from Him.

“As it is, He (Jesus) has been given a ministry as far superior as is the covenant of which he is the mediator, which is founded on better promises.” (Hebrews 8:6 NJB)

“Only in Him (Jesus) is there salvation; for of all the names in the world given to men, this is the only one by which we can be saved!” (Acts 4:12 NJB)

Prologue of Hebrews—Hebrews 1:1-4

God spoke “long ago.” He spoke at various times and in many ways, by the prophets. “Prophets” refers to all the writers of the Old Testament, not just the prophetic books. Some examples:

• Moses – in the burning bush
• Elijah – through a still, small voice
• Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah and other prophets – visions and prophetic words
• David – while he was hiding in a cave

God has spoken “. . . in these last days.”  The “last days” is the period between the First coming of Christ and the Second coming of Christ. The “end time,” or “last days,” began when Jesus came into the world; we now live in the last days, and they will be consummated sometime in the future; nobody knows when.

God’s final, authoritative word to the whole world is JESUS CHRIST. Jesus is God’s ultimate communication, the Source of God’s ultimate relationship with all people.

Andrew Murray says that the great truth that God wants all humankind to know is that Jesus Christ is the only source of salvation, and knowledge of the Son of God is the strength of the believer. (Note: Andrew Murray wrote many small books, and any book of his that you read will strengthen you and lead you into a deeper knowledge of God.)

If you want to understand the message of Hebrews, spend some time reading Hebrews 1:2-4. Think about what this teaches us about Jesus. If you have a cross reference Bible, read some related verses in other places of the Bible. Above all, spend a little time meditating on these 3 verses.

1. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is the ONLY Son of God; His origin is same as His Father’s: He existed before the creation of the world and is eternal. (We become sons and daughters of God only through God’s only Son.)
2. He is the Heir of all things, including the world to come. He owns the world. He owns you!
3. He created the world together with His Father and the Holy Spirit.
4. He is the radiance of God’s glory. Glory here means “all that God is, all of His attributes.”
5. He is the exact imprint of God’s nature. [The Greek language used here is “engraved, as on a coin.] This is why Jesus later said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” (John 14:9) Paul tells us that “all the fullness of God dwells in Him (Jesus).” (Colossians 2:9)
6. He upholds all things—the entire universe—by the Word of His power. This does not mean only Jesus’ powerful word, but rather that Jesus’ Word flows from His power; so when Jesus speaks, His words always produce His desired effect. Colossians 1:17 tells us, “in Him all things hold together!” Be comforted! At such a time as this, when the whole world is trembling, Jesus, by the Word of His power, is holding everything together! He is holding you in the palm of His hand! Focus on Jesus, not the situation or your problems.
7. He made purification of sins! This is the central message of Hebrews. Once for all, for all humankind, He died on the cross and rose again. He reconciled us with God by forgiving our sins and gave us eternal life by rising again! No further sacrifices of any kind need to be given to God, only the offering of our bodies as a living (not dead) sacrifice to God as our greatest act of spiritual worship! Jesus satisfied God’s holiness, removed our sins, and restored our relationship with God.
8. After doing all this, Jesus sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on High. Jesus’ Father told Him to “sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies Your footstool.” (Hebrews 1:13)

What is Jesus doing now, seated at the right hand of His Father?

He is ruling over all the world.

He is waiting for the end of history, when the marriage banquet of the Lamb and all His followers will take place to celebrate His eternal rule.

He is interceding for all who will come to the Father through Him. (Hebrews 7:25)

Question: How do we understand all these remarkable things? We are just now reading the first 4 verses of the book! This is my suggestion: Read these verses over and over and take time to contemplate, and meditate on what they say. You might ask God, as you read each remarkable statement about Jesus, if He has something He would like to say to you personally through these words.

Don’t worry if it seems too much for you to digest. There is a secret here: These are some of the themes that run throughout the whole book of Hebrews. You will detect them as we continue to study together, and the remainder of the whole book will make their meaning clear to you. Remember to relax and enjoy the new knowledge God is giving to you.

Elisabeth Eliott, whose husband was martyred, along with other missionaries, by the Auca Indians of eastern Ecuador in 1956, and who later became a spiritual mentor to so many people, knew well about suffering and danger, and especially about the uncertainty of the world around her. Her words give us strength as we also face worldwide danger and uncertainty:

“The only thing that keeps me stable and settled

in these days of uncertainty

is the absolute dependability of the Word of God.”

The Word of God gives us all we need to know about God, our salvation, and how to live in this world. It is an anchor to our souls for daily living.

Hebrews 1:5-14

Read through this closing passage of chapter one. The writer is comparing Jesus with angels.

There is no evidence that the Hebrews worshiped angels, but apparently they thought too highly of angels. This was because they did not fully understand who Jesus is. When people do not understand God, or turn away from Him, they still continue searching for supernatural help. We can see this in today’s anti-Christian culture. The strongest atheist will seek some kind of psychic help through New Age, or through the false exaltation of angels. This may have been the case of the Hebrew Christians who turned away from Jesus Christ.

We have a two-fold problem: Either deny angels’ existence, “just never think about them,” or exalt them through false worship of angels.

We can do neither. Today we need to learn more about the angels’ role in leading us to God, to salvation, or in protecting God’s people from dangers. Angels are very important to God; they even ministered to Jesus in His temptations and in His last hours on earth. And they are important to us.

As you read through this passage take note of what you can learn about Jesus – about His relationship with His Father, about how the Father exalted Jesus. Then notice how the write compares Jesus with angels.

Next week we will study more about the role of angels in our Christian life. But before you leave chapter one, just notice 3 duties of angels.

1:6—worshipers of God

1:7—messengers and ministers of God

1:13—servants of those receiving salvation.

Take a moment to relax and breathe deeply; ask God to speak to you about what He has said in Hebrews chapter one. Be sure to respond to Him. When you do this, you are actually meditating. One way to look at meditation is to have a conversational relationship with God.

He always wants to talk with you. His Holy Spirit, the Author of the Bible, wants to explain things to you. (1 John 2:27)

“Fear not, for I am with you;

Be not dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you,

Yes, I will help you.

I will uphold you with My righteous right hand!”

God, who calls the stars by name and who causes the flowers to bloom, holds you in His hands.

히브리인들에게 보내는 편지

우리 그리스도인들은 엄청난 불확실성과 사회불안의 시대에 확실한 것을 가진 사람들입니다. 우리는 소망의 사람들입니다. 우리의 소망은 희망적인 생각이 아니라 하나님께서 스스로를 어떠하다고 말씀하신 것은 참으로 그러하며, 하나님께서 하시겠다고 약속하신 모든 것들은 반드시 행하실 것이라는 확신과 담대함입니다. 히브리서의 저자는 그것을 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리가 가진이 소망은 영혼의 닻 같아서, 확실하고 요동하지 않으며 하나님의 임재 안에 들어가게 하노라!” (히 6:19-20 NASB 역자번역)

그리스도인들은 항상 앞으로 나아가고 있으며, 가만히 서 있지 않습니다.  이스라엘 백성이 애굽을 탈출하여 홍해까지 다다랐을때 무슨 일이 있었는지 기억하십니까? 불가능한 환경에 직면했을 때, 그들은 소망을 잃어버렸습니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 “애굽으로 돌아가자 (노예로 돌아가자)”고 말했습니다. 모세는 “가만히 서서 하나님께서 하시는 것을 보라.”고 말했습니다. 하나님께서는 “너희는 왜 가만히 서 있느냐? 앞으로 나아가라!”고 말씀하셨습니다. 믿음으로 전진하십시오!

중요한 것은 이것입니다! 코로나 바이러스가 아니라 그리스도께 시선을 맞추십시오. 부지런히, 공중위생을 실천하고, 손을 깨끗이 씻으며, 여럿이 모이는 것을 피하십시오. 분별을 가지고 책임감 있게 행동하십시오. 그러는 중에도 그리스도께 초점을 맞추고, 그분이 오늘날 무엇을 행하시는 지 보십시오.

질문: 당신은 요즘 하나님께 더욱 가까이 나아가고 있는 자신을 보고 있습니까?

우리가 이 성경공부를 시작하고 이 서신서의 “이곳저곳을 살피며” 읽게 될 때, 이동성의 중요함에 대해 생각해 보길 바랍니다. 히브리서, 그리고 그리스도인의 삶 전반에 관한 하나의 열쇠는 이동성입니다. 그리스도인의 삶에서 현상유지란 없습니다. 가만히서 있는 것은 뒤로 물러가는 것입니다.

이러한 이유로, 히브리인들을 향한 이 편지는 구약의 출애굽기와 비교될 수 있습니다. 출애굽기는 노예에서 자유로의 이동, 그리고 인간이 지배하는 한정적인 존재에서 하나님이 다스리시는 자유로운 삶으로의 이동에 대한 책입니다. 하나님께 대한 전적인의존은 우리가 모든 위기들을 헤쳐 나가도록 이끌어줄 열쇠입니다.

그리스도인의 삶은 길입니다. 그것은 사도행전에서 불렸던 것과 같이 도를 따르는 사람들입니다. (행 9:2) 이스라엘은 믿음으로하나님의 말씀을 받아 그것을 가지고 앞으로 나아가는 데 실패했습니다. 오히려 그들은 인간이 통제하는 율법체계 안에 정착하기로 선택했습니다. 하나님의 길 안에서 나아가는 세 가지 열쇠는 이것입니다. 하나님께 듣고, 그분의 뜻에 순종하며, 그분을 완전히 신뢰하는 것입니다.

이동성은 히브리서의 하나의 중요한 주제입니다. 우리는 히브리서를 함께 공부하면서 죄와 사탄의 노예의 생활로부터, 하나님안에서 새로운 삶으로 나아갈 것입니다. 이동성이 그것의 핵심입니다.

주요 모티브는 이동과 순례하는 것입니다. 출애굽기에서 하나님의 백성들은 광야를 방황했고, 때로 그들의 죄악으로 인해 향방없이 나아갔습니다. 히브리서에서 하나님의 백성들은 기초가 이미 놓인 하나님의 도성, 거룩한 예루살렘이라는 목적지를 향해나아가는 순례자들입니다.

히브리서 전체를 읽을 때, 이동성에 대한 다음의 주제를 찾아보십시오.

• 우리 앞에 당한 경주를 인내로써 경주하는 것 (12:1)
• 연약한 무릎을 강하게 하고 곧은 길을 만드는 것 (12:12)
• 이 땅에서 이방인과 나그네 됨을 인정함으로써 우리의 진정한 본향인 하늘을 구하는 것
• 뒤로 물러가 멸망에 빠지지 않고 (10:39) 오히려 구원의 충만함을 향해 계속 나아가는 것
• 거룩한 성소, 곧 하나님의 임재 안으로 들어가는 것 (10:19)

예수님은 새롭고 산 길이십니다 (10:20). 믿음은 언제나 우리를 그리스도인의 삶에서 앞으로 나아가게 하는 결과를 가져다 줍니다. 우리가 함께 이 서신서를 공부할 때, 하나님의 말씀이 생명의 더 큰 충만함 안으로 우리를 이끌어 주시기를 허락합시다.

이번 주간 동안 시간을 잠시 내어 히브리인들에게 보낸 서신서를 읽고 묵상하십시오. 당신이 예상하는 것이 아닌, 실제로 하나님께서 당신에게 하시는 말씀을 관찰하기를 연습해 보십시오. 관찰이 과학이나 사회적, 국제적인 사건들의 연구에 있어 시작이 되는 것처럼, 모든 성경 연구에서 또한 그 연구의 시초이며 기반이 됩니다. 관찰하는 가운데 ‘누가? 무엇을? 어디서? 어떻게?’ 등과 같은 질문들을 하십시오.

하나님의 말씀인 히브리서가 우리를 삶의 충만함으로 이끌도록 기도합시다.

The Epistle to the Hebrews

We Christians have certainty in a time of great uncertainty and social unrest. We are people of hope—not wishful thinking but confidence and assurance that who God said He is, He is indeed; and that all God has promised He will do, He will surely do. The author of The Epistle to the Hebrews says it like this: “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters” into the presence of God! (Hebrews 6:19-20 NASB)

Most people are able to find rest from busy activities, but few are finding rest for their souls and minds. Corrie ten Boom said it best: “If you look at the world, you’ll be distressed. If you look within, you’ll be depressed. But if you look at Christ, you’ll be at rest.”

There is a rest for the world, but even Christians sometimes miss it. “Rest” is one of the main themes of The Epistle to the Hebrews, and this seems to be an appropriate time for us to study together this beautiful and important book of the Bible. We welcome you to our study. We will post one lesson each week and cover the entire book. Please read the Bible chapter for each lesson; think (that is, study) but also meditate on these precious words. Lesson One

Please read through The Epistle to the Hebrews one or two times. The purpose is for you to understand the general idea of the letter and its main themes. After reading it through, you may want to quickly read it backwards, beginning with chapter 13 and glancing back to chapter 1 – this may help you understand the structure of the letter. It is beautifully written, although no one knows who the author was; consider it a letter to you.

The purpose of this letter is to encourage Christians who were undergoing persecution to not give up on their faith in Jesus Christ, but rather to reaffirm their faith and go deeper into their relationship with Him. The author encouraged them in Hebrews 10:39—”But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul.”

Christians are always moving forward; there is no standing still. Do you remember what happened when the people of Israel escaped Egypt and got as far as the Red Sea? Faced with an impossible situation, they lost their hope. The people said, “Let’s go back to Egypt (back to slavery); Moses said, “Stand still and see what God will do.” God said, “Why are you standing still? Go forward!” Go forward in faith!

Important! Focus on Christ, not on the coronavirus. Be diligent, practice sanitation, wash your hands, avoid large crowds; be sensible and responsible. But focus on Christ, and what He is doing today.

Question: Do you see yourself to be going forward, closer to God these days?

As we begin our study, and while you are “browsing through” the book and reading it, think of the importance of MOBILITY. One key to Hebrews, and to the Christian life as a whole, is mobility. There is no status quo in the Christian life. To stand still is to go backward.

For this reason, The Epistle to the Hebrews can be compared to the Old Testament book of Exodus. Exodus is a book of movement—from slavery to freedom, from limited, man-controlled existence to free, God-controlled life. Total dependence on God is the key that will carry us through all crises.

The Christian life is a WAY. It is THE Way, as it was called in the Book of Acts. Israel failed to receive God’s Word in faith and move with it. Rather they chose to settle down in their man-controlled system of law. Three keys to moving in God’s way are: LISTENING to God, OBEYING His will and TRUSTING Him completely.

Mobility is a major theme of Hebrews.  As we study Hebrews together, we will follow God in Christ from slavery to sin and Satan, into new life in Him. Mobility is the key.

Traveling, sojourning, is the motif. In Exodus, God’s people wandered in the wilderness, often aimlessly because of their sins. In Hebrews, God’s people are pilgrims with a goal, heading to the City that has foundations, the City of God, the Heavenly Jerusalem.

Look for this motif of mobility as you read through Hebrews.

• Running with endurance the race before us (12:1)
• Strengthening weak knees and making straight paths (12:12)
• Seeking our true home, in heaven, by acknowledging that we are strangers and exiles on earth
• Not shrinking back (10:39) but pressing forward to fullness of salvation
• Entering the Holy Place—the Presence of God (10:19)

Jesus is the new and living WAY (10:20). Faith always results in action that moves us forward in the Christian life. As we study together this book, let’s allow God’s Word to lead us into greater fullness of life.

Spend some time this week reading and meditating on The Epistle to the Hebrews. Practice OBSERVING what God actually says, not what you are expecting Him to say. Just as observation is the beginning of scientific study as well as social and international happenings, so also observation is the beginning and basis of all Bible study. Who? What? Where? How? Ask questions like this as you observe.

Consider:

1. Am I a pilgrim? Or am I a wanderer?
2. How am I dealing with this worldwide pandemic crisis? Am I looking to Jesus? Or am I looking to the world?

Let’s pray that The Epistle to the Hebrews—God’s Word—will lead us into fullness of life.

Community of the Holy Fire

What is the Community of the Holy Fire?

Many of you who share this blog with us have asked this question. First, let me tell you what we mean by Christian community. This is Christian community: “Every Christian is my brother or sister, and we are responsible for one another for life.” The Greek word for community is koinonia, and it describes a supernatural relationship, shared with God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, and with all Christians throughout the world. It speaks of an organic relationship: “I am the vine; you are the branches.” (John 15:5) All Christians are members of one body, the body of Christ. We are responsible for one another and accountable to one another. We are the koinonia of the Holy Spirit.

Early Church Christians practiced koinonia by not claiming that any of their possessions were their own, and by sharing them with all who were in need. The result was that there were no needy persons among them, no gap between rich and poor. They proclaimed the Gospel not by merely inviting people to be born again; they went further and invited them into koinonia fellowship with them. Our Pneuma Springs ministry in Seattle (Youth With A Mission) began in community. Just before Thanksgiving Day, 1994, our family, along with several community members, had just moved from New York City to Seattle. A group of students from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, were waiting for us on our doorstep. They asked us to come and help them in their campus ministry. We agreed, but warned them that we did not have money to subsidize their programs. “However,” we said, “everything we have is yours; we are available to you.” They were shocked, and one student asked me for my NY Yankees baseball hat! I gladly gave it to him because I was destined to become a Seattle Mariners loyal fan. It began that way, but in the following years we were able to experience true Christian community with students and staff in the university. They took responsibility for one another. We experienced a new intimacy with the Lord and an intimacy with one another based on the fear of the Lord. When one student lacked money, they all helped. When another got into trouble, the others took responsibility for restoring him yet demanded that he be accountabe to the whole community. We shared leadership and became partners (another koinonia word) in ministry. Students witnessed on the campus and invited people to share “our fellowship with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.” We let them know that to come and share life together with us would “make our joy full.” (1 John 1:3-4)

We have seen the fruit of this community in the lives of students after they graduated from the university. Some are now working for justice for the poor, others for righteousness in corporate law; another former staff member is very influential in the world of the media and international affairs. One is a professor who understands the need for community in academics. Many others are practicing community in their families, businesses and churches. But they all are alive for Jesus, striving to love one another as Jesus loved us, and sharing that love with the world.

What is the “Holy Fire?”

But what about the “holy fire?” John the Baptist promised that Jesus would baptize people “with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” (Luke 3:16) The Holy Spirit brings all Christians into the one Body of Christ; He is the author of koinonia community. He also empowers Christians with supernatural power to share the Gospel of the Kingdom of the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. But how does He baptize “with fire?” Immediately after making this promise, John the Baptist said that the Spirit would gather the “wheat” into His barn, but would burn the “chaff” with unquenchable fire. He spoke not only of the enemies of God but also of sin in the lives of Christians. Jeremiah spoke of the Word of God not only as wheat, or bread for our souls, but also as “fire” that burns away the chaff in our lives. We know that all of us as Christians have “chaff” in our lives: unconfessed sin, prejudice, judgmentalism, refusal to forgive, lust, envy and competition, feelings of unworthiness and uselessness. These are just some of the chaff that needs to be burned away. But as the Spirit cleanses, He also empowers.

So when we say, “Community of the Holy Fire,” we mean that we are the koinonia community of the Holy Spirit, empowered to be His witnesses in the world. “Divided tongues, as of fire, rested upon the heads of God’s people at Pentecost, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:3-4) The Holy Spirit brings the fire of His power, and at the same time He cleanses us by His fire to enable us to serve God in holiness as we proclaim the Gospel in power.

The Community of the Holy Fire is a virtual community. We have no meetings, no dues to pay, no membership records to continually adjust and update. Every Christian who desires to be used by God to transform this world is by nature a member of the community of the Holy Fire, the community of the Spirit. We welcome you and hope that we can share together the joys of life in Christ Jesus.

I am enjoying extensive study of St. Francis of Assisi (ll81-1826), because I believe that he reveals the  best pattern of church healing and renewal, as well as the way to healing of the nations. Few would deny that the church needs healing and renewal, and no one can deny that the nations need great healing.

If you are interested in learning more about this man who was called a “saint” by the ordinary people of Italy long before he was pronounced a saint by the church, I would recommend two books. Of course there are many good books about him, but you may want to begin by reading what he said in his own words, written by him. Francis of Assisi: The Essential Writings, translated by Jon M. Sweeney. In addition, G. K. Chesterton’s St. Francis of Assisi will help you understand the rationale of how Francis lived and spoke, and his importance today.

Contrary to popular belief, St. Francis did not write the prayer, “Lord, Make Me An Instrument of Your Peace.” It was not written until the early 1900’s. But it does summarize his life very well.

One thing St. Francis did write was An Admonition of Virtue and Vice. Here it is:

“Where there is charity (love) and wisdom, there will be no fear or ignorance.

Where there is patience and humility, there will not be anger or indignation.

Where there is poverty (chosen as a lifestyle) and joy, there will be no greed or materialism.

Where there is quiet and contemplation, there will not be anxiety or restlessness.

Where there is the fear of the Lord to guard our home, no enemy will be able to enter.

Where there is mercy and discretion, there will no longer be extravagance or stubbornness.”
